Productivity Papers: Develop the Habits of an Expert

by on 01/17/12 at 5:09 pm

Are experts are born or made? If experts were born, it would mean that people wouldn’t have to make much of an effort to succeed. They would coast through tasks without struggles or setbacks. However, research studies on experts have proven that this isn’t the case. Experts may make things look easy when they perform, but the truth is that it takes productive work habits to get there.

Productivity Papers is a system of printable PDF papers that will help you develop goal-oriented habits and routines so that you can become an expert in your field. It‘s based on the research of how experts work. If you develop the work habits of an expert, you’ll eventually become one.

90-Minute Work Sessions

Experts have developed habits and routines that are conducive to top performance. Anders Ericsson did a study on violinists at the Berlin Academy of Music. He found that the best violinists practiced in sessions no longer than 90 minutes with a 20-minute break between each one. And they almost never practiced more than 4 and half hours a day.

The 90-Minute Work Sessions reflects how these experts work. It will help you get more work done in less time without getting fatigued if you follow it. Develop a habit of working in 90-minute intervals and you’ll see your productivity skyrocket.

Deliberate Practice Sheet

Experts don’t just practice their craft. Ericsson found that they “deliberately” practice it. This is more than repeating a task over and over. Deliberate practice involves concentrated effort on a specific task you can’t do well while getting continual feedback and making adjustments. Experts use continual feedback to improve performance. As performance improves, the task becomes second-nature.

The Deliberate Practice Sheet will help you focus on mastering specific tasks and keep track of your performances. It also allows you to rate your skill, enjoyment and habit level so that you can see your improvement over time.

Specific Goal Plan

Experts set their goals different than others. They make their goals very specific. They have a clear understanding of the what they want to achieve, why they want it, when they’re going to do it, where they’re going to do it and how they’re going to do it. When you make your goals vague, you’ll settle for what’s good enough. Experts reach new heights because they shoot big and make their goals specific.

The Specific Goal Plan will help you plan the details of your goals. It’s a practical plan-of-action that should direct and motivate you to go after what you want with a step-by-step approach.

Chain Calendar

Jerry Seinfeld, one the highest paid comedians with an award-winning sitcom, revealed the way he became a better comedian was by creating better jokes. To do that, he had to to write everyday. He used his own chain calendar and marked an X for each day he did his task of writing. After a few days, a chain would form. The goal was to not break the chain. He never did.

The Chain Calendar will help you form productive work habits like Seinfeld. Just mark an X on the days you do what you tasked yourself. As you stay consistent, you’ll see a chain. You can use the weekly notes on the side to jot down your weekly accomplishments.

Anthony, I can save those images and zoom in and print them. You should water mark them so people can’t do that.

Side note, i love this. I’ll buy it :)

I just started using these pages and am thoroughly impressed with the outcome. Come on people! Pay the measly $7.00. The author is an entrepreneur like us and has taken the time to create these low priced docs for us. They are exactly what I needed to put into practice what I have been reading about in countless articles but did not have the tools to work with.

Email the author once you make your payment just to make sure you get your digital copies immediately. Well worth it. Thanks for putting this together!

This productivity system has really changed how I work. It’s a valuable system that can boost productivity, improve performance and lasts forever. Considering all this, $7 is quite the bargain.

Thanks for sharing your work, Anthony. You’re right – deliberate practice is clearly shown to build expertise. Figuring out how to set up a simple system that supports the research is brilliant!

I look forward to using your tools. The way I figure it, developing my expertise is worth much more than the $7 investment.

Make an app out of this and you will get paid $10. Tracking this stuff on an iphone/ipad, add attachments, perhaps some way to integrate with evernote and you’re on to something big.
