Icons come in many different shapes and forms. It’s not always easy to pick a style. When you’re choosing icons for your menu navigation, it pays to be selective. Some icons are more efficient for scanning than others. Choosing efficient icons will enable your users to navigate faster when using your menu.
There are four icon styles you can choose from with different levels of fidelity. There’s skeuomorphic, flat, solid, and outline. A research study on these icon styles found that outline icons have the highest scanning efficiency, followed by solid, flat, and skeuomorphic with the lowest.
