Why Principles Are Important

This video shows us that principles are the fundamental ingredients of good design. Without following design principles, a cup wouldn’t function as a cup.

Most of the time, these principles are not obvious to the naked eye, which is why many ignore them when they design. Instead, they focus more on the creative aspects of a design. The creative aspects are important, but without the principles you lose the functional essence of what you’re designing.

By following principles you allow yourself to be more creative because you now have a consistent foundation to work with. It’s harder to design something when you don’t have any limitations. That may seem counter-intuitive, but it’s true. At the same time, you don’t want to restrict yourself too much and design something that’s bland and uninteresting. A good designer needs a balance of following principles and being creative. Both are essential to good design.
